Cebu Canyoneering – NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART

“Courage is the art of faith. It’s not being fearless, but having less fear.” ~ Roselle

When I was in the Philippines last February, I did something I never thought I could: I went canyoneering with my children. We hiked through the jungle, walked along the slippery canyon slopes in Barangay Sulsogan, Badian, and ended at the main Kawasan Falls.

My canyoneering experience was simply unforgettable. The canyon was breathtaking, with its lush rainforest, clear turquoise water, stunning waterfalls, and gorgeous rock formations. My family and I were surprised to see food stands perched on top of the rocks. We thoroughly enjoyed the delicious hot banana cue and, most of all, the company of our brave and amazing tour guides, Kate and Jeremy. They truly lived up to their promise that we would return home safely and without a single scratch.

When my children booked this tour, I didn’t research it further because I trusted their judgment. But when I saw what was expected of me—jumping off cliffs—I almost backed out. However, after the 45-minute walk to the site, there was no turning back. I felt waves of excitement as I watched the people ahead of me jump into the water, yet at the same time, I was terrified of drowning since I’m not a strong swimmer. The life vest, helmet, and reassurance from our tour guides gave me enough courage to take the leap. I prayed so hard for God to keep my family and me safe.

I thought to myself: This must be how I felt while being born—absolutely terrified. The only difference is that, back then, I had infantile amnesia.

I swallowed some water and panicked, but I managed to continue navigating the canyon. It felt like a roller coaster of emotions. When we reached the end of the tour, I felt an immense sense of relief and joy. It is NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART, but I did it! It’s an experience I will cherish for a lifetime.

If you’re planning to do the same tour, be sure to have the right outfit—wear a comfortable swimsuit, or shorts, T-shirt, and sturdy water shoes.

Check out the Kawasan Falls Canyoneering website for their tour package. This isn’t a paid advertisement, but I highly recommend their service.
