The Sampaguita is the National Flower of the Philippines since 1934. Even though it was not native to the Philippines. It was said that a man from the Himalayas brought it to the said country.

The Sampaguita is a species of jasmine and is also known as Jasminum Sambac or Arabian Jasmin.

The Filipino legend of Sampaguita is a tragic love story of Liwayway and Tanggol. According to this folklore, Liwayway got very sick and died thinking that Tanggol has forgotten his promise to marry her. Tanggol on the other hand, was not able to return right away to ask for Liwayway’s hand in marriage because one of his parent got very sick. Tanggol loved Liwayway. He wept and wept on her grave until one day, he noticed the small white beautiful fragrant flowers blooming on Liwayway’s grave.

Sampaguita is a symbol of purity, hope, and love. It is commonly used as a garland for adoration.

I wrote the poem above for a friend I met in one of my social media accounts. She told me that her favorite flower is Sampaguita.

I hope you liked the poem and the legend on the beautiful flower, Sampaguita.
