Did you know that there was once a Tulip valued at $1,200 per ounce? Yes! in the 1630’s, the tulip called Sempler Augustus  was considered a prized possession because of its rarity. Back then, tulips are only known to have solid hues and the deep red or purple symmetrical streaks on the white or yellow petals made the flower so special. It was not known during the Dutch Golden Age that the break of the color was due to a virus, Tulip Mosaic Virus which was discovered by Dorothy Cayley and John Innes.

Have you read the novel Black Tulips written by Alexander Dumas? It’s a historical novel about Cornelius who was tried to create a black tulip to win a reward, but his envious neighbor got him in jail. However, God is merciful to the righteous and so, love and flowers drew inside the prison.

Did you know that Tulip is the National Flower of Iran and Turkey? Yes!

Tulips have different symbolisms in different countries and cultures. It symbolizes perfect and deep love, respect, martyrdom, holiness, paradise in earth, royalty, and forgiveness.

What I learned about the tulips other than the market value of its symmetrical streaks is that, if we continue to grow despite our brokenness, we can become more valuable too. Our brokenness makes us fragile, but it’s that brokenness that makes us more beautiful.

I hope you enjoyed reading my poem and some facts about the tulips.
