Mr. Earthworm is one of the characters in my picture book Sleepless Maple. Although he looks funny in this picture above, he is attentive and dependable.
Why did I choose an earthworm to be part of my story? Earthworms or Lumbricina (scientific name) help the environment in many ways.
Earthworms soften the hardened soil by burrowing into it. They eat the soil and in the process, they neutralize it with the microbes contained in their excrement. They decrease the number of harmful nematodes or roundworms, and their waste products contain nutrients such as nitrogen, which helps plants grow.
I enjoyed illustrating Mr. Earthworm. I found his big eyes adorable. I added the blue mustache on his face to give him a distinctive feature that represents strength and bravery. Mr Earthworm might be small but he is wise and reliable.
